The conference, held in Vancouver, was entitled ?Investing in Technology Today? and included numerous presentations and roundtables on issues such as: corporate spending on IT, technology provider innovations, venture capital trends and institutional perspectives on the venture capital and private equity marketplace. Presenters and panelists included Greenstone?s Special Limited Partners and US-based investors such as Larry Birenbaum, Senior Vice President of Cisco Systems, Nick Darby, Managing Director of IT for Dow Chemical, David Posluns of Cedarpoint Investments Inc., and Peter Wolken, General Partner of AVI Capital and a Silicon Valley venture capitalist since 1979.

"Greenstone provides us with so much more than just investment capital and this was another example of their innovation in practice. They created an opportunity for us to access their network in a meaningful way,? said Sanjay Dhawan, CEO Inkra Networks. "Right from the point of company formation, Greenstone?s support and network has dramatically benefited our company?. Recently named as one of RedHerring?s Top 50 Private Companies Inkra manufactures a network services switch aimed at reducing data center costs and complexity.

?We wanted to bring together our partners and portfolio companies to share ideas, exchange information and enhance the value we offer to both groups. The buzz throughout the day was strong with lot?s of discussion among the attendees," said Richard Osborn, Partner with Greenstone. ?In addition, as we are a cross border fund aimed at encouraging regional innovation in Western Canada, we were also pleased with the increasing interest in Canada shown by some of our U.S. partners and investors?.

Greenstone is one of a few Canadian venture capital funds that has strong relationships with U.S. investors, and whose investments consistently include U.S.-based investor participation. The increasing presence of U.S. technology players in Canada is dramatic. From 1999 to 2001, foreign investment into Canada increased 173 per cent.

Osborn added ?In keeping with the theme of the conference, companies and investors are being forced to be more creative and active with growth and investment decisions. Groups around the world are increasingly looking to Canada as a great place for innovation, opportunities and talent in the years ahead. With events like this, our fund hopes to play a major role in this trend going forward.?
